Many everyday fruits, vegetables and oils easily available in shops in Ghana can be blended together to create very natural hair and skincare products that provide the same benefits to your body that many of the popular cosmetics from the top brands do. Adding a natural hair conditioner to your haircare routine will ensure you always have smooth, shining hair that’s less frizzy and easily detangles.

Today, I’m going to share 3 of my favorite homemade hair mask recipes with you. I hope you enjoy making and using them as much as I do.

Before we move on to making our own natural and 100% organic hair conditioner, I will give you a little background on why I choose certain specific ingredients. It is important to note that aside the conditioner helping to soften your hair and making it smoother after each cleansing, using the right ingredients will enable you to enjoy additional benefits. Make sure you are not allergic to any of to the ingredients you use, since this might cause undesired reactions or aggravate certain medical conditions.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an important ingredient in our DIY hair mask. It protects hair from damage and protein loss. It moisturizes hair and lowers chances of breakage; studies show coconut oil has a sun protection factor of 8 hence, can protect hair from sun damage. It works also as a scalp conditioner and deep conditioner for the hair. It is useful in preventing lice and dandruff.

Honey

Honey has been used for many centuries both for food and its exceptional medicinal properties. I still remember fondly how honey was our parents’ go to remedy for the treatment of coughs and sore throat (together with ginger!) It’s also widely used to treat wounds and as a salve to heal burns.

The following are the benefits of honey for hair: It promotes hair growth, it prevents hair loss, keeps the scalp healthy and has antioxidant properties that prevent hair breakage.

Coconut milk

Coconut milk helps to restore split ends and to strengthen hair. It also reduces hair loss, restores dry scalp and hair, promotes hair growth, and heals damaged hair.

Avocado

Aside being a tasty super fruit with enormous health benefits when used as food, avocado helps with the following when applied to your hair: moisturizing and rejuvenating the scalp, promoting healthy hair by making it long and strong and helping to heal damaged hair.

Based on these reasons, it’s easy to understand why using this homemade hair mask every day after you wash your hair will leave it healthy and make it feel nicer to touch.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons of honey
  • One ripe small to medium avocado
  • 5 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Quarter cup of coconut milk

  • Put ingredients in a blender
  • Allow it to blend thoroughly
  • Pour the blended mix into a bowl

Application

  • Part your hair into small sections and apply your conditioner
  • Cover hair for 30 to 45 minutes
  • Wash out thoroughly with cold or lukewarm water

Yogurt, honey and egg hair mask

Yogurt

I’m sure you are surprised to find out that your favorite dairy product can also be used for your hair. Here are some of the benefits of yogurt to your hair; it improves hair follicle growth, cleanses the scalp and prevents dryness. It also moisturizes and softens the hair.

Eggs

The following are the benefits of eggs for the hair; eggs act as hair food and protein for the hair. It helps to stimulate hair growth and nourishes dry hair.

Time to make our hair mask!

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons of honey
  • Quarter cup of yogurt
  • One egg

Application

  • Mix the honey, yogurt, and egg together thoroughly
  • Part your hair into multiple sections
  • Apply your mask and cover for 20 minutes
  • Rinse out thoroughly

This mask should be used before your hair is shampooed!

Apple cider vinegar

The benefits of apple cider vinegar are as follows; it helps to fight scalp infections and prevent dandruff. It protects the hair against itchiness and dryness. It also supports the retaining of the pH level of the scalp and promotes shiny and soft hair.

Olive Oil

When it comes to dietary fat, dieticians and other health professionals are divided on their health benefits. However, there is a general consensus that extra virgin olive oil is good for you. This is because olive oil contains large amounts of antioxidants and is rich in healthy monounsaturated fats so adding it to food helps to reduce your risk of chronic diseases.

Olive oil also has great benefits for your skin. It supports a healthy and moisturized scalp, strengthens hair follicles, leaves hair thicker and healthier and increases blood circulation in hair scalp.

Essential Oils

Essential oils stimulate hair growth, prevent dryness and breakage, keep the hair soft and well moisturized. They also keep the hair shiny and healthy looking.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons of honey,
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons of essential oil

  • Mix all the ingredients together well
  • Part the hair in about 6 sections
  • Apply the mask and leave in hair for roughly 15-20 minutes
  • Wash hair after with cold or lukewarm water
